Leaders from the city of Galesburg met with an Indonesian trade delegation to discussion business and cultural exchanges.

Representatives from both groups met in Chicago. The representatives from Galesburg, led by Mayor Sal Garza, included local business owners from throughout west-central Illinois as well as Knox, Monmouth and Carl Sandburg colleges and members of economic development organizations.

Garza explained in the press release the purpose of the meeting  was to seek "global trade opportunities is one of many strategies we are exploring for Galesburg and west-central Illinois. Meeting with Indonesian Consul General Benny Bahandewa and the trade delegation was very productive. Finding out the types of goods they are seeking and establishing personal contact with potential buyers is a solid first step."

Both sides saw opportunity in working with each other. Indonesia can open a market for itself and its businesses, and plans are being created to educate individuals on available opportunities. Representatives from Galesburg were also able to network with members of the Indonesian delegation, including ministry members and directors.

Beyond business, the two groups took time to discuss higher education opportunities, including colleges attracting students from Southeast Asia. The business forum opened the door for more discussion on the topic.

"The event was a great success in our view. It was wonderful to see so much interest in doing good business together. Our friend Mayor Garza and his staff will be welcomed to bring a trade mission to Indonesia to move discussions along and conclude agreements," Benny Bahandewa, the Indonesian consul general, said in the release.

The meeting was part of Galesburg's continuing efforts to find international partners with whom to work.
